History of the Cane Corso

The Cane Corso is the much respected and valued native breed of historical Italy. Claimed to be the descendant of the Roman canis pugnax dog used in warfare, this breed is synonymous with power, protection and loyalty.

Used in the days past for the hunt of large game (facing bears and wild boars), the Cane Corso eventually established his place in Italian society through his versatility from working the fields driving cattle, to the home as his Master's protector and companion.

Temperament

The Corso is loyal, intelligent and willing to please. They make excellent guard dogs as well as family pets. They love and protect the family children. The Corso is protective yet gentle. The Corso is not known to wander either as it enjoys to be at its master's side. This makes them fabulous house, property and personal watchdogs. Although a Cane Corso will not go looking for a fight (they are not fighting dogs), they will stand their ground in a threating situation. Socialisation and training is essential in the early years of the dogs life so obedience and limits are set in place, creating an understanding between dog and owner. Because this breed aims to please its owner, a close bond is established very quicky so it is most important that the owner enforce " pack leader" status early in the dogs life. The Corso can be suspicious of strangers, but wonderful with the family. They do require exercise for mental and physical wellbeing.
